WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 30th NOTES

Tonight those who attended were Shawna, Molly, Sarah and Me (Katrina).

I brought the Aesop's Fable cards again, Shawna brought a Beatles Illustrated Lyrics book.

We met at the coffee shop and SURPRISE it was stand up comedy night... they were sooooo loud and said a lot of things that pushed my buttons and were mildly to blatantly offensive. I felt like an angsty easily pushed over the edge teenager again (as a feminist and as a woman...). We looked at eachothers childhood obsession drawings and drew some. It was hard to concentrate and hard to communicate with eachother, so we left. We went to the Bad Waitress and spent another two hours together girl talking and drawing and eating delicious food.

Drawings for the show will be picked up Sunday or Monday. Childhood Obsession pages should be turned in by Friday.

It was a great evening. It was beautiful and foggy outside. Makes me want some SNOW!

NEXT WEEK - WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 30th

(by Katrina)

PLEASE work on your child obsession zine contribution. ALSO, if you want to hang anything in the show at Modern Times let me know!

We will meet Wednesday night, Location TBA, around 8 pm.

If you want to craft, there will be a craft night the next Wednesday (November 6th, also location TBA).

Official call for submissions!!!

Hi!

As most of us know, Katrina has an art show coming up in November.  I would like to get the HORSES HORSES HORSES zine finished for her opening! This means everyone should please get me a drawing or two by our next meeting on Wednesday, October 30th. If that isn't possible then you can bring them to me at work.

here are the specifications:

I'll be making a black and white half zine. That means your drawing should fall within the paper size of 8.5"x5.5" I would like the zine to be portrait orientation.

In case you forgot HORSES HORSES HORSES is a zine about childhood obsessions. My childhood obsession #1 was obviously HORSES so you can expect a drawing about all the different horse books I had and read religiously and a drawing of all the different horse toys I had.

repeat: please bring me a few drawings you want to have included in the zine SOON because Katrina's opening is SOON!!

THURSDAY OCTOBER 17th NOTES

(by katrina)

It was a nice rainy Thursday evening. We met at Molly's beautiful house (with heated floors!!!). There was no drawing, but there was pizza and book browsing (and for me, the fun of watching a friend's family interact).

in attendance ... Molly and me AND Molly's sister Sarah and their parents.

Books we looked at...

The Book of 100 Hands
Drawing the Female Form
Drawing 50 Vehicles (I'll find a link for this later)
The Mountain that Loved a Bird by Alice McLerran (thank you Sarah!)
Aesop's Fables card set (I will try to find online images/information for them)
Molly's big printing book (I want to look through it and I don't remember it's name)

THIS WEEK

(by katrina)

Can we meet on Thursday instead of Wednesday? Does that work for people who want to hang out?
(we would meet at someones (molly) house and have snacks and draw and look at books.

I was poking through this website today... http://imagespublicdomain.wordpress.com/category/library-of-congress/
Maybe you will like it too?

NOW, Lets work on more mini zines.

If you want to be in charge of making one, post it on here (email me your gmail address and I will add you as an author!) and figure out what you need and when you need it by.

What is it called?
What is it about?
What are you looking for in submissions?
When you plan to have it ready? (is it for an event?)
When you need contributions by?
Do you want/need cash help for production?

Also, what is the...
size
image orientation (landscape or portrait)
edge margin
wanted contribution pages per person (minimum and maximum)

Will it be black and white?

I am making one about 'monday' type moments. I will post soon my list of details so that you can contribute.

Text, fb or email me (katrina4ever AT g m a i l DOT com) about meetings, if you have questions, etc...

WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 9th NOTES

(by katrina)

This week was a small small meeting. Only Sarah and me.
We met at the Nicollet and were able to lounge in the sqishy armchairs around a small coffee table.

No drawing happened except for I drew a sad mouth and Sarah drew a sad sad face.

Books that were present and looked at...

Other notable topics of conversation were house plants, Bright Eyes and that I admitted to owning the record box set, Amelia Bedelia and other childhood favorite books, decorative tittles - love or hate and changing opinions over time, the variety of bean in my cup of soup that was not fully cooked, Sarah said to make sure to chew those ones really well, I ended up picking them out. Also Sarah had coffee that was hot and tasted strong. We had prime people watching views of the intersection from our seats and learned that skateboards are really loud.

I am having a show at Modern Times in November. If you, doodle club member, would like to contribute to the show, let me know!!! So far confirmed I have Molly and Sarah. Hopefully Shawna too? I am making a thing to display zines, they will be on hooks to take down and read.

I think we should set up an etsy page to sell the zines also; maybe some crafts too. I'll get on that later this week!

LAST MINUTE CHANGE

(by katrina)

Instead of at that* house, lets meet at the Nicollet at 730/8

cool? cool.

*I think we will be meeting there later this month though

and, boo, wednesdays look bad for the rest of the month, what are Mondays or Tuesdays like for folks?

we did not meet this last week and other club business

(by katrina)

Two people couldn't make it, I had an awful headache, the storm was coming in, blah blah blah. We did not meet. But next week we will. At someones house. If you are interested in joining us, contact me for details.

Lets all work on our jokes and childhood obsessions. Emily and Sarah, please post sizes and deadlines.

Lets get some more zines done, then I will send a package to Quimby's in Chicago. I would also like to get some out to Moon Palace Books and Boneshaker Books. Boneshaker will be having a zine event in a month or so. Jenny and I went to the last one. It was nice. All the zines brought were set on tables around a room with people milling about trading zines and browsing. Where else could we put our zines? I Like You? Big Brain Comics

I would like to make patches with the 'logo' of the club.

On another note...

For each future doodle club meetings I would like to make a post containing:
  • who was there
  • what books we brought to share (linked to information on them)
  • any links to pages we discussed or looked at that are worth sharing
  • draw battle/collaboration documentation
  • any interesting things we think you should know, like upcoming shows and events...
  • etc...
AND lets start linking up our own blogs and things we love as gadgets on the side bar. Everyone draw a 2"x2" picture of themselves and that will be your link list image. We can also use that to identify who writes posts or whatever.

GOING FORWARD...

(posted by Katrina)

Thank you everyone who came out for Zine Fest. It was a really great time. There were so many great people tabling their zines and posters and other neat things. There were so many great people just there to check it out.  Thank you Minneapolis.

Last week was Jenny's last doodle club get together, this week was Emily's. Oh ladies. I am going to miss you so much. We will work together using technology and the USPS. You will form auxiliary chapters and hopefully we will all meet our drawing/book sharing/girl talk/nerdy craft talk needs.

This week was our last meeting at Anodyne.

Next week will be at someone's house. If you don't know who that someone is, message/call/talk to me (or whoever you know about doodle club from) for details.

After next week we may rotate between coffee shops and houses. It will be getting cooler soon and so knitting and crafting will be in the air too. I wonder if maybe it would be a good idea to have every other week be drawing, and then the next knitting/crafting?  Most of us do both so we would still get our weekly girl time in, I have some other friends who don't draw but we like to knit together regularly in the cooler months. It would be fun. On the crafting weeks we could take turns leading some sort of tutorial or informational talk and help with something specific (like gel medium transfers, book making, mitten gussets, crochet, blah blah blah).

♞ Childhood Obsessions Zine ♞

Hello D O O D L E C L U B !

I would like to put together a zine about childhood obsessions! The title is going to be HORSES HORSES HORSES because my childhood obsession #1 was all things equine. I'm undecided about the size, but I'd like it to be portrait orientation.  Please, bring ideas/drawings to next weeks meeting -- the final zine will ideally have 2-4 drawings per person.

WEDNESDAY

       same place same time

I am looking forward to this week. I found an old sketchbook of mine that only had a few pages used, so I tore them out! It's like new! I also found a book in the kids section of goodwill (graphic novels end up here...) called Skyscrapers of the Midwest, I really like the crosshatching in it.

Have any of you read Special Exits? If you haven't, please do! I will hopefully get my copy back in a few weeks and would like to re read it, by then you should have read it too and we can all talk about it!

I wrote down some email addresses of a few of you who wanted to be able to post and edit on here, and now they are lost. Please email me and I will add you as a contributor. katrina 4 ever at gmail, you have to have a gmail account too.

See you soon!

woo hoo almost done!

I spent some quality time at kinkos. Oh I miss the days of punch cards and fully stocked counter caddy things (there was a stapler with about enough staples for a year and a crusty white out, I had to ask for a glue stick at the counter). Anybody know of anywhere to make copies and work on stuff for less than 12¢ a copy?

It was a red day, I wore a red dress, I got red berries iced tea and the zine has a red cover.

I tried to get a picture of my assembly set up (without getting people in it, all the computers and cubicles were being used). Usually I try to have things assembled at home, but I wanted to resize some of them and not cut up your originals. I don't think I was done this during daylight in about 7 years. It definitely is a different scene.

I felt a little like I was making a mix tape cover (typewriter, same size margins, lists...) for the middle information page. I think it all turned out pretty nicely! I will have them on Wednesday. Lets meet at the same place again, same time, on Wednesday.

WHATS GOING ON

4th of July project
Thank you so much to everyone who contributed. Everyones drawings are so great and so unique to your style. This is going to look awesome. I will be hanging out at Kinkos on Monday! They will be in your hands Wednesday!
(If you didn't get something to me but want to, Sunday will be the last last chance. I might even be able to pick it up from you!)

projects/ideas
Everyday can be a Monday book. I will be running this one. Not sure on the final name. It will be a beautiful illustrated collection of our own Monday moments. #ricecakeproblems (that might have to be the name! also, please start using that to tag your own ricecake problems, whatever they may be). I am thinking this will be the same size and landscape as the 7/4 one.

Joke book. This will be collaborated by Emily. Start thinking of jokes you like (or just jokes you can remember) and sketching out what they look like, or what its like telling them, or reactions, etc...

Snark book. Molly is working on this hilarious thing. Think Sark, but sassy and snotty and sarcastic. I cannot wait to see updates!

OH NO! ice cream. A man yelled "OH NO" and we all (like everyone within 30 feet) looked at him. His ice cream fell off this ice cream cone! It was tragic. We all drew about it. PLEASE email or text me a picture of your drawing from that night. I will post them on here!

What other ideas do you guys have for projects? It would be amazing if everyone masterminded one at some point. If you have one you want me to post on here, or a picture you want to share, please email or text it to me. I want to figure out if I can make it so other people can access this blog without it accessing my whole google run everything. Does anyone know how? I haven't looked it up yet... I kind of want someone to just tell me how or do it for me.

lets share
I would like to add two bookmark sections on here. One will be our blogs, tumblrs, pintrest boards, whatever else people do etc... The other can be blogs/art pages/online comics/websites we like.

THIS WEEK

Lets meet at anodyne again, 8pm ladies! Please bring me your finished drawings!!! See you there!

Tuesday, July 23, 2013

Update to the update.

Wednesday (tomorrow) we will meet at anodyne coffeehouse. See you ladies around 8!

Monday, July 22, 2013

THIS WEEK

FOR WEDNESDAY JULY 24!!!

Meeting is location T.B.A. tomorrow (Tuesday).

Please have your 4th of July thing done. I am also behind so the absolute final deadline for the project will be NEXT WEEK. If everyone has it done this week, I will have the zine done by next week. PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF YOU WILL HAVE ONE DONE FOR NEXT WEEK. I will wait to make it then.

I really hope that I get at least 5 projects back. If you are planning on contributing please email me (katrina4ever at gmail.com). I would like to have a nice bunch of stuff. Even if it is just one drawing for the present and the past, that would be fantastic. It doesn't have to tell a story, it can just be a drawing or picture. If you want to write a small story and have a tiny image (or even none at all) that would be fine. Please just keep the dimensions and 4 page limit in mind.

I will be at a 4th birthday party near Anodyne Coffeehouse. I am thinking meet there? If you have another idea or feedback on that idea please email me about it.  They are open until 10. I have only been there a handful of times and really have liked it there.

(UPDATED UPDATE: We will meet at Molly's at 8 pm.If you don't know where that is, email/text/whatever way you contact me, do it)

This week please have a rough draft done (or at least an idea) of what you are doing for the project.

As always please feel encouraged to bring an old sketchbook, books you like to look at, fun markers, spirographs, etc...

Next week (the 24th) please bring you project contribution DONE. Ready to go, like I-could-go-to-Kinkos-after-meeting-with-you-gals-and-make-it kind of ready. If you are mailing or dropping it off (or emailing), please please get it to me by the 20th.

Love and other indoor sports,*

I will be responsible for assembling this and the production of this mini comic zine. If you want to throw a few dollars at me with your submission, that would be awesome and you will get a great finished project back.

*Did any of you ever read Starring Sally J. Freedman as Herself? If you did, lets talk about it.
Maybe we could talk about other childhood books too... and who we would be if we were the Babysitters Club.

PROJECT ONE

DOODLE CLUB MINI ZINE
PROJECT ONE

Details:
This will be quarter size (1/4 a piece of letter paper - 8.5" x 11") and landscape, not portrait  (so 5.5" on the bottom/top and 4.25" on the sides). Please leave 1/3" margin on all boarders. Also, this will be black and white (and gray), so if you use colors it might look f-ed up... so keep that in mind.

Topic:
The 4th of July. Independence Day.

Assignment:

This has two parts. My plan is to make it a split zine, look at one side and that is one part, flip it over and turn it around and you have the other part. I think it will have a red card stock cover. Make a small comic (or drawing/drawing series with or without words), one for each part.

part one:
Independence Day 2013.
This is about this years activities. What did you do? Did you have a cute cupcake that you had to draw? Did you work? Did someone drunk say something hilarious? whatever you want. Just make a page or two or three or four (keep it under 5).
Please let me know where you were for the 4th. Wisconsin? South Minneapolis? Roseville?

part two:
4th of July memories.
This is a memory or series of memories about the 4th of July. Please also keep this 4 pages or less. Anything. Jello salad, fireworks with friends when you're little. Those damn snakes that were the only thing we could buy in Minnesota. Sparkler horror stories...
If you can state or make a note of what year it was, that would be great. Also geographical location would be nice. If age is a good detail to know, give me that information too.
